According to a new report, HTC will reduce the number of phones it produces in 2018 to focus more on research and development efforts for future devices. Meanwhile, the company plans to devote more resources to marketing the limited number of phones released next year. HTC continuously shows struggle after posting a net loss of $237 million in the first three quarters of 2017. Is this the true beginning of the end for HTC, at least in the world of smartphones?

Apple has sparked plenty of criticism after exposure of the company intentionally slowing down phones. Apple released a statement apologizing for not being clear about reducing the performance on devices with aging batteries to prevent them from spontaneously shutting down. The company is now offering a discount on battery replacements to anyone with an iPhone 6 or later. Apple faces at least eight lawsuits from this incident.

Some Note 8 owners are reporting that once the device hits 0% charge, it will no longer charge no matter how long it’s left on a charger. It's possible that Samsung set the limit too low to compensate for the smaller battery or it could be a charging circuit defect. Samsung appears to be accepting returns on a case-by-case basis, offering some either refurbished or brand new units. Although there’s still no official word from Samsung on the issue.

The FCC has certified the first at-a-distance wireless charging system. The technology is called WattUp and uses a radio frequency charging system to send power to devices wirelessly at a distance. The transmitter can act as both a traditional induction wireless charging pad or wirelessly send power to multiple devices at a distance of up to three feet. The company Energous, is aiming to implement this WattUp technology into consumer electronics in the near future.

Apple has been hit by a wave of class action lawsuits after admitting the company is intentionally slowing down older iPhones. The lawsuits were filed in California, Ohio, Indiana and North Carolina. They are suing Apple on behalf of iPhone 6, 6s and 7 affected owners for paid compensation and requires the company to stop reducing processor speeds.

Apple seems to be intentionally slowing down previous iPhone generations in order to convince people to buy newer models. An undisclosed performance downgrade from a software update may have become company policy, as suggested by deteriorating benchmark scores after installing iOS 11.2. It appears CPU performance was drastically reduced to avoid putting too much pressure on the aging battery. Interestingly enough, simply replacing the battery seems to be restoring the handset’s initial performance levels.
