How to Connect August Smart Lock to Google Home

Did you know that August was the first smart lock to work with Google Home? However, you may noticed that August doesn’t appear where you would expect it to in the Google Home app. That’s because Google has yet to add August to the list of devices you can join. Fortunately, we discovered somewhat of a hack to link your August Smart Lock account to your Google Home.

How to Connect August Smart Locks to Google Home

  • Install the proper apps:
  • “Talk to August”
    • Open the Google Assistant app on your phone and tell the assistant to talk to August by simply saying or even typing; “Ok Google, talk to August”. You will then be prompted to sign in with your August account info.

How to Control August Smart Locks with your Voice

With everything signed-in and confirmed you can now execute commands related to your August lock simply by talking to your Google Assistant. “Ok Google, talk to August” is the primary command for calling upon August however, the August Assistant seems to go through a lengthy question and answer process every time you want to check the lock. After a few moments of frustration, I realized that if you said, “OK Google, ask August to lock the front door,” it would simply work.
Some additional commands are:
  • “Ok, Google, ask August to list my locks.”
  • “Ok, Google, ask August check the front door.”
The first, second and third generation locks from August will work with Google Home but remember, you will need the August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge to do so.
Sure, it is a tedious little hack but that’s how you can get your August locks to pair with your Google Home.

Samsung Readying Bixby For Smart Home Speaker To Take On Amazon, Google And Others

Currently there aren’t any specific info regarding the features of the device or its release date. However, what is known is that project development is reportedly being slowed by the stagnant progress of their AI, Bixby. A Samsung spokesperson has stated that developing Bixby in English is taking more time than originally expected mainly because of the lack of the accumulation of big data. Virtual assistants can only work better and improve their features the more you use it.
Before a smart speaker can hit the market, the software has to work as advertised, otherwise releasing it wouldn’t make sense. Even when it does hit the market, it will be facing some tough competition. The biggest players are currently Amazon’s Alexa-powered speakers and Google with its Home device. Apple’s HomePod and Microsoft’s Invoke speakers have also been recently announced but these are stated to be more music focused.
Bixby’s crucial voice control functionality still isn’t available. Although Samsung did release an early beta a few weeks ago to help get the digital assistant on track.

Microsoft Cortana Joins Voice-Controlled Speaker Market With The Harmon Kardon Invoke

Harman Kardon accidentally leaked a web-page for their new product called Invoke. It is a speaker that uses Microsoft's digital assistant Cortana. The page has since been taken down, although the company did release a teaser video.

Harman Kardon’s Invoke is crafted from premium materials with a metallic speaker body delivering powerful sound a full 360-degrees. It will allow users to utilize Microsoft's Cortana to voice control their music, smart home devices, make and receive hands-free calls through Skype, obtain answers to questions and more.
With Apple and now Microsoft joining the voice-controlled speaker market, Research firms are predicting that the number of owners in the U.S. will double this year. Microsoft will reveal details about Cortana Skills Kit to developers at the Build Conference this week, however, the Invoke speaker is set for a release in "Fall 2017."
