Samsung Exec Says Solid-State Batteries Will Hit Smartphones Before Electric Cars

The biggest advantage of batteries being made from solid instead of liquid electrolytes, is the much lower risk of catching fire and exploding. After the Galaxy Note 7 recall, battery safety has become a major concern among manufacturers.
A Samsung executive stated that the company will start manufacturing solid-state batteries in one to two years with the first application being for smartphones. However, this battery technology may not hit the electric vehicle market until 2025, due to the more strict safety regulations.
Could we see solid-state batteries in phones by 2018 or 2019? Honestly, if it’s mature enough to compete with conventional batteries in term of capacity, lifespan and charging speed, a release is possible. Luckily, Samsung isn’t the only company working on the new battery technology. There are a few others including LG, which will reportedly start producing them around the same time.

Qualcomm Announces Under-Display Fingerprint Sensors With 2018 Release

Qualcomm has recently announced that it is working on a new fingerprint technology that can work beneath glass. The company made the announcement in Shanghai and expects the tech to reach devices by this time next year.
Reportedly, the sensors will not only be able to scan fingerprints, but are also said to be able to detect a person’s heartbeat. The scanners will be capable of working under displays, glass and even metal. Qualcomm is using “ultrasonic fingerprint detection” to see through these thin materials. There is one catch, right now it will only work with OLED displays, which means all LCD displays won’t be supported at first.

Smartphone manufacturers are racing to increase screen-to-body ratios and the use of these new sensors could certainly help. Vivo is using the tech in a modified Vivo XPlay 6. Although according to reports, the fingerprint scanning is a little slow on the prototype.
Qualcomm will reportedly offer test units to manufacturers and anticipates that phones featuring the new technology will hit shelves Summer, 2018.

Reportedly The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Will Be Revealed In September With $950 Price Tag

According the reports, Samsung is readying the reveal of the Galaxy Note 8 toward the beginning of September with a surprisingly high price tag of $950.
The Note 8 is expected to look nearly identical to the Galaxy S8 Plus with only a slight increase to a 6.3″ screen size. Samsung is reportedly including it’s signature S-Pen, a dual camera system and 6GB of RAM to further differentiate it from the S-line. Oddly enough, a leaked promotional poster shows the flash and fingerprint scanner between the dual camera.
According to the recent report, the company just might take the wraps off the upcoming Note during IFA in Berlin, which starts September 1. This hasn’t been confirmed yet, so there’s still a chance that they will reveal it in mid-August.

The OnePlus 5 Specs Include 8GB Of RAM For $539

The OnePlus 5 is a 5.5″ beast, powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. Coupled with 6GB or 8GB options, the OnePlus 5 should be lightning fast.

OnePlus 5 specs

  • Color: Midnight Black, Slate Gray
  • Display: 5.5″ 1080p Full HD AMOLED
  • Operating system: OxygenOS based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 835
  • GPU: Adreno 540
  • Rear camera: 16MP, f/1.7 + 20MP f/2.6
  • Front camera: 16MP, f/2.0
  • RAM: 6GB or 8GB
  • Storage: 64GB or 128GB
  • Battery: 3,300mAh
Perhaps the biggest change is the camera setup. The OnePlus 5 has a dual camera setup on the back, with a 16 MP sensor and a 20 MP telephoto lens. The camera design definitely takes after the iPhone 7 Plus and it isn’t a surprise that the camera shoots in similar quality with portrait mode.

The OnePlus 5 is an unlocked phone with dual SIM compatibility. The company is calling it a “true world phone,” with support for 34 networks across the globe.
The Slate Gray model with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage will cost $479, while the Midnight Black model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB will sell for $539. That’s a bit higher than previous models, but still significantly less than its competitors.

LG's G6 Second Year Promise Extends Warranties To 2 Years In The United States

The company is calling this new program, the LG G6 Second Year Promise and it will offer full coverage from potential defects for an additional 12 months at no extra cost. LG stated that it is noticing customers holding onto their phones for nearly a full 24 months, so extending the manufacturer’s warranty only makes sense to show that they stands by their products.
The company did admit that they have been providing similar benefits to Europeans, but notes that this particular program is exclusive to the United States. G6 customers will have to register their phones on LG’s website within 90 days of purchase or within 90 days of today’s announcement to qualify. The first year of warranty claims will continue to be handled by carriers, but customers will have to call LG or visit the website to make a claim during the second year. New or “newly refurbished” replacements are promised to arrive within two business days of filing a claim.
The LG G6 Second Year Promise won’t replace your phone if it breaks like HTC’s Uh Oh Protection program but it does give US customers a little peace of mind from defects after the first year. Fingers crossed for this becoming a new manufacturers trend going forward.

Sources Claim Samsung Will Announce Galaxy Note 8 in August

Samsung’s Galaxy Note phones have traditionally been unveiled in September, until last year’s Note 7 disrupted that trend with an August 19 announcement date.
And now according to sources, the Galaxy Note 8 could see an announcement similar to it’s predecessor. The sources claim that Samsung has decided to “accelerate the launch of the Galaxy Note 8,” to get a head start on the upcoming Apple iPhone 8.

It was expected that Samsung would take more time in releasing the Note 8 to ensure the launch went off without a hitch. However, it seems that the company is looking to steal the thunder from the release of Apple’s next iPhone.
The Note 8 is expected to have an impressive screen-to-body ratio, like the S8+ and a dual camera lens setup. August is only two months from now, so we’ll have to wait and see what Samsung does with their phablet.

Samsung Reportedly Skipping Display-Integrated Fingerprint Sensor On Galaxy Note 8

If you’re thinking that it looks similar to a Galaxy S8, you wouldn’t be wrong. Recent leaks and rumors have been pointing to a similar design featuring the Infinity Display. Its also expected to have a dual-camera on the back and of course, a detachable S Pen.
However according to a new report, Samsung has decided against installing a display-integrated bio metric sensor on the Note 8 because the technology isn’t as secure.
A Samsung official said, “We made every effort to install a display-integrated fingerprint sensor on Galaxy Note 8, but we decided not to install it on this strategic phone due to various technical limitations such as security.”
Additionally, rumors are circulating claiming that Samsung is planning to unveil its next Galaxy Note in late August ahead of the iPhone 8 announcement. Its certainly plausible but only time will tell whether the new rumor is true or not.

OnePlus 5 Press Render Leaks Reveal Unoriginal Design

It seems we won't have to wait much longer to get a glimpse at the next device from OnePlus. What appears to be a press render of the OnePlus 5 has leaked revealing the back and sides of the phone in black.
Ok, let's just say it...it looks ridiculously similar to the iPhone 7 Plus. The dual camera and flash configuration are the same shape and in the same location. The matte black color is identical and even the OnePlus logo is in the same spot as the Apple logo.
Admittedly, it’s a little disappointing to see OnePlus go with such an unoriginal design, although it could be neat to use an iPhone running Android.
The company is hosting the launch event for the OnePlus 5, June 20th, at 12PM Eastern.

Qualcomm's Quick Charge 4+ Gives 50% Charge In 15 Minutes With ZTE Nubia Z17 First To Support

Quick Charge 4+ is a relatively small update to 4.0 but with 3 key features:
Dual Charge: Charging a device via Dual Charge divides the charge current, allowing for lower thermal dissipation and reduced charge time. This was already an option in earlier versions, but now it is more powerful.
Intelligent Thermal Balancing: Engineered to move current via the coolest path autonomously, eliminating hot spots for optimized power delivery.
Advanced Safety Features: Monitors both the case and connector temperature levels simultaneously. This extra layer of protection helps ward against overheating, short-circuiting or damaging the Type-C connector.
Qualcomm announced that the ZTE Nubia Z17 will be the first support Quick Charge 4+ with other devices soon to follow.

Reports State, LG Working Directly With Qualcomm To Ensure Snapdragon 845 For G7

Because the Snapdragon 835 processor was tied up with Samsung's Galaxy S8, LG was forced to decide between delaying the G6's release or using last year's hardware. In the end, the company decided to use the Snapdragon 821 and although it may not be much of a difference in everyday usage, many could not look past the difference on paper.

Its likely that LG feels that the processor difference may have differed potential G6 buyers because normally, LG and Samsung flagship devices use the same processor.
The report claims that LG and Qualcomm have started working on the development for the new processor in early May with it being based on a seven nanometer manufacturing process.
