Today, the Justice Department officially announced that it is approving the $26.5 billion T-Mobile and Sprint’s merger following an agreement between the two carriers and Dish Network. This agreement is meant to position Dish as the fourth competitive carrier in the U.S., taking Sprint’s place. As part of the agreement, Dish will purchase prepaid businesses Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, and Sprint prepaid customers. In the agreement with the government, T-Mobile states they will not raise prices for three years and will cover 97% of the U.S. population with 5G service in three years. T-Mobile and Sprint still face an ongoing lawsuit from 13 state attorneys generals to block the deal on anti-competitive grounds. The merger cannot be finalized until after that case is resolved. The trial is set to begin on Oct. 7, but that date could be pushed back until Dec. 9.

Today Nintendo revealed the Switch Lite, designed as a less expensive alternative to the original console/tablet hybrid. It comes in at $199. $100 less than the original unit and for that price you get a lighter, more streamlined version of the Switch, but also a few caveats. The Switch Lite is designed explicitly as a handheld: you can’t connect it to your TV, and the Joy-Con controllers are built right in. It features a “slightly” improved battery life with the display remaining the same at 720p. Although, the new model has a 5.5" touch display, compared to a 6.2" from the original. The Lite comes in yellow, grey, and turquoise as well as a special light grey Pokémon Sword and Shield edition. The Nintendo Switch Lite will launch on September 20th.

Today, Chinese mobile maker Oppo today unveiled its solution to the "word's first" Under-Screen Camera. According to Oppo, the selfie camera is embedded under a section of the display that's made of a highly transparent custom material with a special pixel structure, which enables light to pass through to the lens. The company has already admitted that putting a camera under the screen will make it harder to match the quality of an unobstructed smartphone camera. To compensate, Oppo said it has developed software algorithms that address haze, glare, and color cast issues, resulting in pictures that are "on par with mainstream devices." The selfie camera is also said to be larger than other front-facing cameras, featuring a wider aperture lens.

Google just officially tweeted an image of the Pixel 4, a smartphone that the company isn’t expected to announce until October.  The image shows at least two rear cameras and a third sensor of some kind in a large camera bump on the phone’s back. There’s also another tiny dot at the lower right of the camera module, which could be a microphone. Additionally, the fingerprint sensor is noticeably gone from the back of the phone. Google has already confirmed that the next-generation Google Assistant will launch on the Pixel 4 this fall. The updated Assistant will offer dramatically faster responses to voice commands and questions plus keep a much better normal-flowing conversation.

Samsung is officially postponing the release of its foldable phone only days before it was originally scheduled to go on sale. The durability of the $2,000 Galaxy Fold came into question after some reviewer units failed due to issues with their displays. Samsung issued at statement: "We want our customers to have the best experience possible which is why, after initial feedback, we have decided to delay the release of the category-changing Galaxy Fold to make sure it measures up to the high standards we know you expect from us. We plan to announce the [new] release date in the coming weeks.” Some reports suggest that the Galaxy Fold won’t hit shelves until sometime in May at the earliest, but Samsung is giving itself plenty of leeway with its unspecified timeframe.  The Galaxy Fold is a surprisingly highly anticipated device considering its price tag, however all of the pre-orders have been sold out for weeks.

According to sources, the LG G8 could feature the use of “Sound on Display” technology. This tech relies on vibrations from the display to transmit sound. This means that there is a chance that the company could eliminate the need for an earpiece speaker, which also means that we may see their next smartphone without a notch.
