Elon Musk announced that all Tesla cars being produced as of today, will have everything needed to achieve Level 5 self-driving. This means that every Model S, Model X and even the more affordable Model 3 will eventually be able to drive autonomously at “a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver." The reason for doing this, according to Musk, is to increase driving safety and reduce traffic-related accidents. While the hardware will be included in all Tesla cars going forward, it will be an $8,000 add-on to enable the software.
